Denture are made of a light-weight and durable acrylic material that can be adjusted, relined and repaired as needed over the life of the appliance.  Partial dentures can be made from acrylic, a combination of acrylic and a metal substructure which adds durability and support for more comfort (these are called cast metal partials), or metal free options such as Valplast that are flexible and hug around your teeth almost invisibly.  Which option is best for you depends on the anatomy of your mouth, what teeth you have remaining, and your personal goals.  For some, esthetics are the most important factor.  For others, they just want to be able to chew up a thick steak.  A conversation with you dentist should help determine what's best for you.
